Exactly one year ago, aliens invaded Earth. But it wasn't the kind of invasion you'd expect. After descending from space and destroying any opposition, the giant spaceship known as The Bell just... sat there. For a year it's been floating silently over the ocean, quietly observing how Earthlings live. Everyone's pretty much used to it by now.

Everyone, that is, except the Magic User's Club. They're a small band of misfits who can do actual, honest-to-goodness magic! Their leader, Takeo, doesn't trust the aliens to stay peaceful. He wants to fight the alien menace, but it'll be a tough task when his club consists of a perverted president, a flamboyant VP, a flaky princess, a bumbling new recruit, and her temperamental best friend! Can this motley crew pull it together and save the world?

Haruka Hani is a second-year junior high school student who goes to a school called Hinomori Gakuen. A member of the school drama club, she has been working on the script for a play the club plans to put on at the upcoming school festival. She’s been having trouble finishing it, and her childhood friend Tamaki Teijou has been urging her to hurry up. All in all, she seems to be enjoying her life. From time to time, monsters called Zaiju (Beasts of Sin) appear and attack Hinomori, the town where Haruka lives. But the Heart Princesses are there to fight the monsters. Haruka looks up to these princesses who protect the people of Hinomori from the Zaiju, wishing that she too could be a princess someday. Then one day, when she is working on the script at home, a mysterious cat named Jin comes to her and says, “You seem to have the right qualities to be a princess. What do you think? Would you become a princess?”

Note: The first episode of the anime was unfinished at airing time. It aired within an hour-long block, with the first 22 minutes being animation and the rest of the block consisting of documentary of the anime's creation and an apology from director Takashi Murakami. The complete version of the first episode was released in September of 2017. The following episodes also aired in hour-long blocks with their respective production documentaries.

The story begins when the protagonist Hikaru meets aliens Lala, Prunce, and Fuwa while watching the night sky. She learns of the "Star Palace," where the 12 Star Princesses of the constellations kept the balance of the universe until they were attacked. Lala is searching for the legendary Precure warriors to help find the 12 scattered "Princess Star Color Pens" and revive the princesses. When Fuwa is captured by an enemy, Hikaru wishes to save Fuwa, and a Star Color Pendent and a Star Color Pen appear to allow her to transform into Cure Star. From then on she works to collect the pens and raise Fuwa, who is the key to reviving the princesses.

Though they can't communicate with words, song seems to work just fine. UMA is so precious to the universe, but alien hunters are after UMA! The whole universe is in danger if they catch UMA. UMA must be protected and the hunters defeated!
