The Times of Botchan

Bocchan no Jidai

Also known as The Times of Botchan.

Status: Finished
Genres: Drama , Slice of Life

The Meiji Era (1868-1912) was probably the most defining period in Japanese history. It was a time of massive change from the more traditional; Tokugawa era to a positioning of Japan in the modern world. Contemporary writer, Soseki Natsume, suffered due to all the social and cultural changes and expressed his feelings through his character Botchan, a classic in the vein of Mark Twain or Charles Dickens. This massive work over 10 volumes could, in other hands, have been but an informed text book. However, the solid script by Sekigawa explores the period through an adult story whilst the art by Taniguchi portrays the material with exquisite and elegant detail.

The Man Without Talent

Munou no Hito

Also known as The Man Without Talent.

Status: Finished
Genres: Drama , Slice of Life

The Man Without Talent is an unforgiving self-portrait of frustration. Swearing off cartooning as a profession, Tsuge takes on a series of unconventional jobs—used-camera salesman, ferryman, stone collector—hoping to find success among the hucksters, speculators, and deadbeats he does business with. Instead, he fails again and again, unable to provide for his family, earning only their contempt and his own. The result is a dryly funny look at the pitfalls of the creative life, and an off-kilter portrait of modern Japan.
