In Hathaway's Flash Hathaway Noa, still haunted by his past actions (not to mention the spirt of deceased Newtype Quess Paraya), joins a terrorist organization called Mafty and adopts the false name "Mafty Navue Erin". The organization Mafty is fighting a terrorist campaign against the Earth Federation government, and they are eventually able to acquire the incredibly powerful prototype Ξ Gundam, which Hathaway becomes the pilot of. Using the Ξ Gundam Mafty attempts to attack a meeting of high-ranking Federation cabinet members in Adelaide, Australia to force them to vote down a provision which would strengthen the Federations already considerable powers.

As a point to note, this novel focuses on a version of events chronicled in creator Yoshiyuki Tomino's novelized form of Char's Counterattack, rather than his animated movie version, and as such, several discrepancies can be found between the animated work and this novel, making it more of a semi-canonical UC storyline, rather than 100% official canon.

Gundam Sentinel

Gundam Sentinel

Status: Finished
Genres: Mecha , Sci-Fi

The Japanese modeling magazine, Model Graphix, began to serialize an original monthly Gundam novel named Gundam Sentinel (ガンダム・センチネル). The series ran from 1987, until its conclusion in the month of August in 1988. Gundam Sentinel became a cult hit, due to its super-detailed mechanical designs of the series and the intricate story by veteran writer and Mobile Suit Gundam fan, Masaya Takahashi. Set during the same timeframe as Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ, after the fall of the Titans the Earth Federation sends an expeditionary force called Task Force Alpha, to deal with a group of elite Federation officers who have formed their own Earth-supremacist faction, the New Desides.

Gundam Sentinel took on a much more realistic, technical style of thinking and look at the Gundam universe, where mobile suits were seen more as fighter jets or military weapons, rather than as cartoonish robots. They were larger, their weapons more powerful than their predecessors', the characters were older and the plot was on a smaller scale than what is usually found in other Gundam. It also marked the debut of Hajime Katoki, who would become one of the franchise's most prolific mechanical designers. Gundam Sentinel is perhaps the best-known Gundam side-story ever written, and is said to be for the most mature of Gundam fans.

The series was never animated (although a short animated television commercial for a Gundam Sentinel model kit was made) or released as a manga. However, the model kits continue to be popular among Gundam fans and new Sentinel designs crop up every now and then.

After Gundam Sentinel completed its run, all of the individual articles were compiled by Model Graphix, some new material and artwork was added, and it was published as a 320-page photo-novel, under the title Gundam Wars III. It was released in September of 1989, is highly regarded as one of the best Gundam novels ever written.

In July of 1990, the story was again republished as a novel titled Gundam Sentinel: Alice's Confession.

Gaia Gear

Gaia Gear

Status: Finished
Genres: Mecha , Sci-Fi

Gundam Gaia Gear is the story of the resistance group Metatron’s struggle against the Man Hunting Attachment (MHA) police force of the tyrannical Earth Federation in the year UC 0203. To improve their chances of winning, Metatron creates a memory clone of the legendary Char Aznable. Char Afranche, aged 19 years, assumes command of Metatron and pilots the Gaia Gear Alpha after learning the truth of his origins.

Gundam Gaia Gear was written by Tomino Yoshiyuki and features mechanical designs [mostly] by Ito Mamoru. Gaia Gear was Tomino’s first attempt to portray the 3rd century of the UC universe. Later works by Studio Sunrise have invalidated Gaia Gear and it is now considered a UC side story (when it’s remembered at all). Ito’s mechanical designs are innovative and hearken back to the days before the "Gundam Look" was set in stone.

Gundam Gaia Gear first appeared as a serial in the Japanese edition of Newtype Magazine (from April 1987 to December 1991). The story was then collected in five novels that ran from September 1988 to April 1992. It was also a radio drama that was collected on 5 CD’s (the first released in November 1992 and the final in July 1993). Two soundtrack CD’s accompanied the radio drama. Mechanical designs were featured in the February, March and April 1991 issues of Hobby Japan Magazine.
